Regina Flora provided this report on the recent bird count:
Southwestern Piedmont Master Naturalists joined with Virginia Museum of Natural History staff on May 13 to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day. This includes
the Global Big Day Bird count as an annual celebration of the birds
around us and reported to E-bird.
The
11 birders recorded sightings at CC Camp, Rocky Knob, Mabry’s Mill, and
the park at Lover’s Leap. Binoculars and the Merlin app sound function
helped identify birds in treetops and underbrush.
61
species of birds were observed during the field-trip. The birders were
most excited about the Hooded Warblers, Tanagers, American Redstarts,
Ovenbirds, and Black and White Warblers. Of course naturalists were
easily distracted by wildflowers and insects as they watched for birds.
Submitted
observations help us better understand global bird populations and
migratory patterns. Ebird data shows Global Big Day brought almost
55,000 birders together virtually from 253 countries by submitting
almost 132,000 checklists with eBird— again breaking records for a
single day birding.
