Botetourt Ponds Trip - GBBC

Every February birders across the globe participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count over the course of four days. SWP VMNs had a chilly but rewarding Birdcount at Botetourt Ponds on Feb 18, hosted by expert birders, Dr Keiper and Dr Ivanov,  from the VMNH.

These observations provide scientists with counts of global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.

The VMNH birders were excellent field guides and offered close-up tripod views of various ducks across the pond. Thirty-two species of birds were reported to e-bird during two counting hours, including a large number of overwintering gadwalls and ring-necked ducks.

Following the count the group lunched together and chatted about other possible birding adventures this year. The chapter’s outreach committee will continue to focus on birding this year by encouraging all birders to participate in Global Big Day, Hawkwatch, October Big Day, and Christmas Bird Count.
